Photography: The Colors of Phnom Penh and a little bit more with the LUMIX GX8

“The Colors of Phnom Penh” and a little bit more. Cambodia Oct/Nov.2015

Pushing the LUMIX GX8 to the limit?
Not yet, this one has plenty more to offer and yes,
I am traveling very light
without sacrificing quality.

One of those perfect afternoons, magical light and Birds in the sky over the Grand Performance Hall at the Grand Place,
Phnom Penh.
The Grand performance Hall has a very special place in my heart, it was here in 1992 that I photographed for the first time after the Pol Pot regime the APSARA Dancers, it was a first for them and me after the war. Of course that was done on good
old Kodachrome.

an endless Journey through Color and Time."

Some of you already know that I have been traveling to Cambodia since 1992 and nothing has changed, I still visit Cambodia yearly, rain or shine.

You maybe wondering that after all those countless visits I don’t get bored…believe me, I never get bored in Cambodia. I love this Country with its beautiful people who at times suffered so much and still do today.

Every time I am in Phnom Penh or in other parts of Cambodia I feel like I am going back in time, sure there have been a lot of changes since 1992 but somehow I truly feel at home here.

It is not only the amazing temples and ruins from the Khmer Empire that I find so fascinating; I guess it is also my personal interest in Archaeology, that I return year after year.
But then there is so much more when roaming the country site or just strolling through the streets of Phnom Penh, sitting in one of the many side Cafe’s watching life go by and let the subjects come to you.

Only a couple of weeks ago the opportunity arose again to visit Phnom Penh to take a group of editors from different media around and introducing them to the new Panasonic Lumix GX8. What a great location to use Phnom Penh to showcase the ability of this new Lumix GX8, after all, it is practical my back yard…

Early morning, exercising along the Mekong River.
LUMIX DMC GX8 - Lumix G Vario 12-35mm f:2.8, ISO 200

Of course staying only one or two days is never an option for me and I added a couple days at the front and at the backend of the official trip.
I might add the group of 12, all from Singapore were very cool and I had no problems getting them motivated even in the wee hours of the morning until dark.

Thanks a bunch, you all have been great and my special thanks to the superb Panasonic group/support team like Shawn, Ziang and Kim, thanks a lot you guys.

As many of you know already I usually don’t talk much about all those technical issues I rather let my images do the talking.

But I like to mention a few things now; all images are taken with the Lumix GX8 using the 12 to 35 mm f: 2.8 for most of the images with the exception of a few that have been taken with the great little 20 mm f1.7
For all outdoor shots I used ISO 200, for early mornings and very late in the afternoon I sometimes used ISO 400.
Inside the Russian and Old Market in Phnom Penh and during my out of town venture to the wholesale fish market I varied the ISO between1600 and 2500. Those are super dark places and some I visited also in the middle of the night.
Here of course the new dual stabilizer system came in extremely handy since I didn’t use a tripod for any of these images.

The meat-section at the Old Market

Again the GX8 performed exceptional well under any conditions with very good color rendition and sharp images even at a higher ISO, the Noise as we call it now is actually looking more like a very nice film grain which I like a lot.
This was a very nice field test, under many difficult conditions.

Since I know Phnom Penh fairly well, I do discover new things during each and every visit and as mention before I never get bored here.

I also decided for this trip to take a slightly different approach and I was shooting fairly laid back and a lot of the featured images just came to me.
I hate chasing things around…in other words I was very relaxed on this Journey even during a 3:00AM morning shoot.
Well, I was the one who decided that and there is nobody else to blame but me.

The only problem, my Tuk Tuk driver didn’t show up on this particular morning, so I had to chase another one at 2:45AM who could take me out of town by 3:00AM. Now you might think it is easy to get another Tuk Tuk at that time of the day… no chance, but somehow I managed to locate one and all worked out well in the end.

Please Note:
All images are taken in RAW format and processed with very minimal adjustments in Lightroom.

It rain a bit overnight and by the time to get out and about for sunrise there was almost no more evidence from the nights downpour.
